The recession hits home
Some say that Park City and Summit County are insulated from the recession -- no factories to close and no widespread reports of foreclosures. But others say, as a resort town which relies heavily on tourists with lots of disposable income, Park City and its surrounding towns are in deep trouble. What is your assessment of the situation and how has the economic meltdown affected you and your family?

DVL may need to layoff many long term employees and that's sad. Seems commingling of owner's funds was at fault here as well as the 'economy' excuse we got. If a unit is rented, shouldn't those funds go directly to the owner and not to finance mismanagement?
As a very lucky resident and employee of Park City the recession hasn't hit my family particularly hard.....yet. Maybe it's because we don't have much disposable income and have been living within our means for so long that going without the vacation or lots of extras doesn't feel too different. Nonetheless, when I see friends and hard workers around the state losing their jobs for no other reason than there just simply isn't work, it worries me. These are the people we depend on to come have a great time and spend their money. When they are faced with not being able to pay thier mortgages and the possibility of state or church assistance for food, they won't be coming here to play and that WILL start to hit our pocketbooks too....it just may be later than other places. The other side of that sword is that when our friends and families and maybe even ourselves get back to work, the first priority is going to be to replace what was lost....homes, cars, businesses that perhaps failed. These will inevitably, and rightly should be replaced prior to returning to vacation hot spots like Park City. Once the gravity of the recession fully impacts Park City, I know it will take some time to bounce back to banner years like 2008. For all of you who don't think we are impacted yet, just talk to our seasonal workers many of whom came here with the promise of jobs and found a sluggish market. Granted most of this was due to lack of snow but when even Sundance is VERY slow and large fortune 500 companies are cancelling retreats in light of the economy, many of our hotels and resorts have been forced into early layoffs. If that's not enough to convince you, look at the cutbacks being made.....seasonal workers that would likely have had the opportunity to stay for the summer last year are being laid off. Knowing that Park City is not only the most beautiful city in the world and boasts the best snow, but also has the most resilient and wonderful people, I know our glory days are far from over. It just may take patience and pulling together to get through.
I wonder if the mayor is aware that Park City Municipal workers were laid off April 12th, and that an ad was in the Park Record at that time to replace those workers? I was laid off, and in the exit interview, was given no valid reason. I was complemented on my performance, and attendance, etc. , and was told we have to let people go in the Summer. So why would they do something that contradicts these facts? One can only guess. I do know that they kept people from the Winter season, that were also Seasonal workers, and that they seemed to be younger than me. I know the people that were laid off and they were left scratching their heads too. One thing stands out--they were about my age , lets just say over 30. It reminds me of other jobs I've had, employees have no rights, other than to quit, and they have no voice and no one to be their advocate. Oh there are laws against discrmination, both federal and state, but in this state employers just wipe their ass with those laws. The do nothing state, unless your'e an employer. So for you employees, well, go get a lawyer that specializes in employment. 150.00 an hour, or try livin on unemployment, or go looking for another job--quick!

Here is my story about how the recession and just plain bad luck have affected me…
After working for 5 years for park city municipal I was told I was being laid off “for budget reasons” I kind of new this was coming as I had turned in my manager for violating city policy and he the sort of person that holds a grudge for a long time and I was assured by the HR department that I was safe from retaliation ..yeah right I had just bought a house and put my entire savings for the down payment $20,000 unemployment doesn’t cover my new mortgage payment I have to drive a car with an expired registration as I don’t have the money to replace the cracked windshield about 200.00 and 168.00 for the registration!! While only making 9.00 hr at my new job!! I have a son in high school that needs 20.00 for some class or another every week and has autism his MEDS are 500.00 a month!! and was told by Medicare that I make too munch money. what 9.00 hr to much money!! Then my wife all so gets laid off from her job with the city, well that’s just great. Last week I get pulled over for speeding (yeah I know) but remember my registration is expired! Well the nice officer “PC PD” only gave me a ticket for the expired registration thank god for that he could have impounded my car and that would have set me back 400.00 and this is just the tip of the ice burg. I reapplied for the winter season and was told that I was no longer QUALIFIED for the job what? after more than ten years working for the city I am not qualified what the #@$& yeah right. So thank you park city municipal for the many great years and many thanks to the street department employees that was my 2nd family for many years
