You can build it: but will they park and ride?

The Summit County commission, this week, voted to go ahead with plans to build a park-and-ride lot near the intersection of Rasmussen and Homestead roads in Jeremy Ranch. It is hoped that Salt Lake commuters will use the lot to carpool which could reduce the amount of traffic coming into Park City on S.R. 224.
Do you think anyone will use it? Are people willing to get out of their cars and onto a bus? Is that the right location for this grand experiment? Sound off by clicking comments below.

This idea makes about as much sense as a dog park at Quinn's Junction. Neither will be used. This is very poor planning.

It either has to be very convenient or very hip to do. I'm not sure that it will relieve any traffic.

The commissioners actually think that someone is going to drive all the way from Salt Lake, park at Jeremy, get out of their warm car in order to wait in the snow and cold for a bus that may or may not show up on time (in order to get to a job that requires them to be on time) just to save some traffic going into Park City... Bhah-hah-haha.

That IS funny.

Visitors will not know parking is adjacent to Jeremy Ranch even if there is a huge flashing neon sign with arrows, or signs on the summit because the snow will cover them. There will have to be lots of lighting (safety) and snowplows will be responsible for plowing on an hourly basis. How can the city inform the folks that are coming to visit there is a designated parking area?
People that are staying in Park City or Deer Valley will continue to use underground parking. Noone wants to park in the snow, far from town, and wait for a bus to pick them up in the freezing temperatures. If it's the employees that work in town & weekend visitors the City fathers are trying to stop from parking in the city limits it seems apparent they are discriminating against them.

This reminds me of the change over on Main Street to paid parking. Employees still have to find a place to park after coming out of work late at night (alone) or when the temps are very low....
The attempt to use the meters is a disaster because visitors still don't know about the meters (especially when it snows). There is noone walking up and down those streets to advise visitors that there are meters. Does the city really need the revenue from ticketing, and how much is going to the company that is responsible for the ticketing? Not to mention the meters are hideous and ruined the Old Town ambiance.
Who does this "small select group" at City Hall think they are anyway. Thinking through ideas thoroughly has never been a strong point of theirs.

That new lot will be nothing more than a great place to sell your used car. A nice place to park your car with a big "for sale" sign in the window.
The dirt lot across from the Jeremy store has been used frequently to park cars for sale. Now we all have a nice paved lot to sell our cars without having to worry about getting a citation, all provided by taxpayers.

why does summit county wait until mid september to start a project like this anyway? in a few weeks, all of the jeremy ranch residents are going to have a big fat mess on their hands and alot of mud on their cars.

Everyone should consider the impact a park and ride would make to this location. It would be across the street from a major elementary school which has already encountered problems due to its proximity to Interstate 80. On Wednesday, September 5, 2007, a woman in a jeep stopped and offered to drive three young girls home. The girls were on the sidewalk outside of JRES with an adult who was just ahead of them. The girls ran, the sheriff was contacted, the school was contacted. If you increase the traffic in the area of this school and allow for a park and ride, the safety of our children will be at stake.

Ack! The sky is falling the sky is falling!

They have to start somewhere and frankly I would rather see more of this type of development out in JR and Pinebrook than in the junction.

I say put the low income housing out in Jeremy Ranch right next to the park and ride.

I will preface my comments by saying.. I don't live in Park City, Salt Lake City not the state of Utah.. however I am familiar with this area - regular vacationer and no, i don't drive it, I prefer the shuttle.

My question is.. why at Jeremy Ranch and not farther down/up the I-80. If the majority of traffic is coming from outside PC what's a P&R doing in Park Cities side yard and not where the majority of traffic originates.

Great spot for a new Farmer's Market!

I’m not thrilled with the location, too much traffic congestion at the JR four-way stop already. However, if the bus service is direct to PC and there aren’t a dozen stops, I will use the service and believe others will as well.

I do not believe there are enough incentives for this park and ride to work. If 10% of the cars get off the highway it makes the streets faster.
There has to be a cultural change. We as a community have to guilt people into parking.

Great idea!!! Perfect location.

There were lots of naysayers before TRAX was built. "No one will use it" they said. Of course, they were sooo wrong. People will get out of their cars if we make it easy for them to do so. Please build this and make it a reality. Let's have Utah lead the way to the new world order.

The dollars could be utilized for many other projects which are truly needed. Will Park City residents get out of their Mercedes and BMW SUVs to get on a bus? What an eyesore for Jeremy Ranch! Not to mention who might be lurking in the park and ride.

It will get used by JR and other PC areas people who carpool down to SLC, not the other way around.

To get people to not drive their cars into PC you need to have fewer parking spaces in PC so they have no place to park. Building the parking structure on Swede Alley was the dumbest thing ever.

So... if the buses are usually empty now...how will building a place for folks to park their cars to take the bus be an improvement? I am a recent bus rider due to a new 16-year-old driver in the household (come on...do you think she would take the bus!) I am amazed at how empty the bus is. Parkites profess to be such earth friendly tree huggers, but I don't see anyone taking the bus!

You got bigger problems if you ride the bus while your 16 year old daughter drives.
