Global responsibility and the Middle East crisis

Around the world, citizens of every nation are watching in horror as all hopes of peace in the Middle East crumble. What is the United States' responsibility, if any, in trying to stop the fighting in Israel and Lebanon? Do you think the fighting will spread to other countries in the region? What would you do if you were a world leader? Obviously, there are no easy answers but, since nothing has worked so far we must seek new ideas. Send us yours by clicking on "comments" below.

Amen to Israel...The international community cracks me up...they do essentially NOTHING and then criticize Israel for protecting itself to the extent that it has.

It is unfortunate that innocent people (likely Arab Christians) are getting injured, but they can blame that on everyone but Israel. Other than Israelis, the people residing in the Near and/or Middle East are in general (and obviously with generalities there are exceptions) the most duplicitous, untrustworthy and impossible to reason with people ever to walk this Earth.

Anonymous said...

The first poster is obviously half a whack job! no generalities or stereotypes there. I'm confident most Americans are too rational (and kind) to see it his/her way.

Anonymous said...

You are the whack job and a sucker at that! Stop smoking the peace pipe brother and take off the tye-dye. Most Americans don't have the dopey, ignorant Berkeley-like attitude you have! Don't you dare criticize Israel until you have walked in their shoes. You would be pissing in your pants if you had to live even one day in their noble existence!!!

Anonymous said...

Israel, shmsrael!

Haven't we listened to their whining and funded their foibles long enough?

It doesn't matter how many exclamation points you use: 'noble existence' ... ha!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Let's see, "duplicitous, untrustworthy and impossible to reason with people." Ever been to D.C. you Arab-hater?

Anonymous said...

Hey idiots...who is blowing up Americans - Arabs or Israelis. Get real. I actually attended Berkeley. Please Blogger 3 don't associate me with Blogger 2 and the other fools that can't see clearly for whatever reason.

Israel is a great nation and ally. Arab nations should be wiped from the Earth. A Middle East controlled by Israel and the U.S. would be great, but unfortunately unworkable. Wish it was.

Nevertheless, smiling bright right about now as Israel rolls in to Lebanon. Down with these psychopathic nations that threaten not only Israel's existence, but our country's existence. Wake up you Morons.

Why are the pro-Israeli posters on this thread so filled with vitriole?

Their attitudes (and obvious lack of understanding) fall right into line with obstructionist Israelis who have refused to give Palestinians what they're entitled to.

Turn off FOX News and think! Israeils in Beirut --that hurdle was cleared decades ago.

Ungrateful Israelis should appreciate what they have been GIVEN and stay within the confines of their own promised land -- Incha Allah!

Allah Akbar

Anonymous said...

Dear Crazy - Yes, you, the last e-mailer, the Palestinians aren't happy with just the so-called occupied territories and cannot be trusted. They have proven this time and time again. THAT is why the Israelis haven't GIVEN them their so-called land. By the way, let's not forget Palestine was not a country, it was a British Territory prior to it being Israel. All your e-mail has done has possibly helped Homeland Security to focus in on you. Your closing Arabic remarks only solidify what most Americans think (and correctly so) that you are a bunch of crazy lunatics.

Anonymous said...

OK, let's all calm down. Let's face it, Israel is a great ally as one previous blogger mentioned. Heck, supporting Israel is not even a partisan issue in American politics. Every U.S. President has supported Israel for the most part - from Clinton to GW Bush. Israel has proven to be brave, reasonable, and a rational voice in an otherwise irrational third world Middle East. They are a good Western influence.

On the other hand, all Arabs or Muslims are not bad people. However, those of you who like to think that terrorists only make up a minority of Arabs or Muslims are fooling yourselves. Most, if not ALL, of the Arab and/or Muslim dominated countries are filled with crazy terrorists or those who support terror. I know it is a scary thought, but generally true and has been for decades and decades.

Anonymous said...

One blogger had a good point that the Palestinians are really not satisfied with recovering the occupied territories like the Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem, etc. They want to destroy Israel. Also, one additional point, these territories became "occupied" because the Israelis were attacked by the so-called Palestinians and the Israelis kicked their asses. Same goes for the Golan Heights and the psychos in Syria. Israel won after being attacked. After instigating the fight and losing, these nut-job Arab countries then have the audacity that demand it back. Screw them. Its not unlike a school yard bully getting his ass kicked and then crying foul. Any sane person knows Israel is in the right. As for Mr. Allah Akbar, you are the ingrate. Garbage like you doesn't even deserve a VISA to visit this country. Leave now.

Anonymous said...

You know what is so funny...during the COld War when the Arabs were supporting by the USSR, a Superpower and Israel by the other Superpower (the U.S.), this little tiny country of Israel time and again managed to defeat the Arabs. This alone shows who is rational and who isn't. Both sides were well-funded. What was the tie-breaker ? Intelligence and rational thought. Side to Israel. It will be no different this time. To quote the first blogger, "Amen to Israel".

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Be glad you live in a country that allows this.

War is ugly, it always has been. But, if you go to war then there is only one goal, to destroy your enemy so they can never be a threat again.

So many people are against Isreal for what they are doing but these people are either people who want them to die or people that forget how small they are. This tiny country is surrounded by millions of people that do not believe Isreal has a right to be on this planet. Isreal must stand up for it's self just like any one should.

When we were children and faced a bully we must knock that bully to the ground. We keep doing it until he/she stays down. You take away his/her power to scare and intimidate. If you do not then you will constantly live in fear. Isreal has a right to live as do all people on this earth. They must continue until their enemy is destroyed or gives up.

The muslim comuntiy must band together and refute the violence and denounce Hezbulah, Hamas, Al Quaida and all groups like them.

All people that live in the free world will not allow this to happen any longer. We have had enough!

IF YOU DO NOT STOP THE KILLING THEN WE WILL KILL YOU. PERIOD!!!!

We cannot live in peace with terror. If you come to my home and threaten my family then you will be met by the tip of my sword.

P.S. Muslim extremist are not the only terrorists. Does the name Tim McVey ring a bell?

To the blogger that doesn't think I know what I am talking about. I do. I know many, many Middle Easterners, have formally studied the Middle East, and have traveled many times to various parts of the Middle East. You are likely the one who doesn't know much about this topic.

Here's another little CORRECT tibbit to chew on and swallow...Israeli likely treats Arabs better than Arabs treat themselves. You don't see Israeli leaders killing their own people in mass (or at all for that matter), do you jacka$$. That is standard operating procedure in the Muslim run lunatic nations and ALWAYS has been. It has nothing to do with America, Europe, Zionism, Israelis, or anything else other than these crazies doing what apparently and unfortunately comes natural to them.

OK folks and so called experts, wrap your head around this.

(1) In Mecca, Muhammad preached and exhorted people to submit to Islam. In Medina, he used the threat of the sword to compel people to convert to Islam.

(According to the Medina verses, Allah accepts converts who do not believe in him inwardly, but will kneel to him outwardly under threat of death. Muhammad did not have this view of Allah until he became a war lord and used force to compel people to accept his rule.)

(2) In Mecca, Muhammad led the life of a teacher and prophet and followed disciplines of prayer, fasting, and worship. In Medina, he was the political ruler and the military commander. During his ten years in Medina, he personally led 27 military attacks. Prior to his death, he conquered most of the Arabian peninsula.

(The Allah of Medina allowed his prophet to be a warlord seeking military conquest. In like manner, he encourages Muslim leaders to spread the religion of Islam by the sword--which they did on an epic scale after the death of Muhammad. The conquests continued until the Muslims met those with stronger armies, or they outran their supply lines. The Muslims eventually conquered about 50% of the Christian world--the eastern Mediterranean lands, the Middle East, and North Africa--and gradually extinguished most of the Christian testimony in those lands.)

(The Westward rush of conquest was halted exactly a century after Muhammad's death. The Muslim army in Spain attacked Gaul [France] and was defeated by Charles the Hammer at the battle of Tours [732 A.D.]. Muslims subsequently switched to expansion through proselytizing and mercantile colonies. However, when new Muslim nations arose with great armies [e.g., Seljuk Turks, Ottoman Turks, and Moguls], they reverted to the expansion of Islam through conquest. The Ottoman Turks conquered the remains of the Christian Byzantine Empire and took Constantinople in 1453. They attacked Europe from the east in 1529 and 1683, and both times were stopped at the gates of Vienna by European armies. Three times [732, 1529 & 1683], Christian civilization in Europe came close to extinction from invading Muslim armies.)

(3) In Mecca, Muhammad had one wife. During his last ten years of his life at Medina, he married twelve more women.

(The poor family man of Mecca became the wealthy, voluptuous sheik with a harem of "wives" in Medina. Polygamy and harem culture debases women and makes men hedonistic and narcissistic. Societies that sanction polygamy, harems, and concubines have always assigned a low status to women.)

(The Medina Quran's heaven for men is a garden paradise where every male sensual pleasure is catered to by nubile nymphs--just as every sensual pleasure of Muhammad, as the voluptuous sheik of a harem, was indulged. The Medina Allah is a God for men. Goldmann says Muslim women have a hard time getting into paradise.)

(4) In Mecca, Muhammad fought against idol worship. In doing so, he exempted Christians and Jews from his proscriptions and persecutions and respected them as "people of the book." In Medina, he persecuted Christians and Jews as infidels.

(Christians and Jews in Islamic countries never know when they will be protected and respected or persecuted and reviled. The situation is often fluid so that protection can suddenly gives way to persecution. Historically, the best Christians and Jews can hope for under Muslim rule is second class citizenship and heavy taxes from which Muslims are exempt. When jihad and war lord sensibilities were in the air, Christians and Jews often faced forced conversion, banishment, slavery, sexual bondage, or death.)

OK let's see you so called experts top that.

The people of WWII understood that. America seems to have lost it's teeth. We have become too comfortable and feel like nothing can happen to us.

How about 9/11/2001 when terrorist brougt the fight to our door step. or the thousands of other people killed or injured since the Jews were given that tiny piece of land after WWII.

Yes WWII is realavent and so is the rest of history. Have we not learned anything from our past or are we doomed to continue making mistakes over and over?

Anyone who is against Israel is likely an Arab, a neo- nazi or just a flat-out idiot. These Arab lunatics really need to be stopped. Trust me, it is like you are in an alternative universe when you are around them.

Americans are only fooling themselves if that is what they believe. They cannot be reasoned with at all. Brutual unrelenting force is the only language they really understand. Sad, but true.

I haven't seen Allah Akbar post anything offensive about Jews, however, I certainly can't say the same for the duped neanderthals, who want all Arab nations wiped off the face of the Earth???!!!!!!

And talk about hating yourself, if you racists had any integrity you would spew your swill out in the open so your unsuspecting neighbors and everyone else could be warned of your hatred.

Instead, sadly, you hide behind "anonymous." You're no better than mask-wearing, cross-burning Klan members of decades ago. In fact, you're worse!

Mohammed: With all due respect, I do not think that all people that are critical of Arab or Muslim nations are because they are KKK members or share those sentiments.

KKK members aren't exactly friends to people of Jewish faith and so it seems unlikely that they would favor Jews so fervently over Arabs. A KKK members would more likely hold the opinion that Jews and Arabs should kill each other off. No one seems to be saying that.

As I'm sure you know, sephardic Jews and Arabs look almost identical - religion, not ethnicity, is the only difference pretty much. In any event, is there anything you think can be done so that Israel can peacefully co-exist with its Arab neighbors or are you a Muslim that, like the terrorists, calls for the destruction of the modern-day Israeli nation ?

Anonymous said...

I wasn't referring to all people. Because, unlike the racists who have posted on this blog, I would never try to lump all people into any statement -- too generalizing, stereotyping, whatever.

The Klan references were metaphors for the racist hatred that is being spread on this thread.

I think my analogy between white hoods and keyboards is dead on (regardless of how the Klan feels about Jews).

In 44 posts I haven't seen any disparaging remarks about Jews, not one. Why is The Park Record providing a vehicle for anti-Arab propaganda?

Perhaps the previous poster has made some of the offensive comments here and doesn't like being compared to the Klan? Man in the Mirror-type stuff

Remember, God (Allah) sees through your courageous, anonymous moniker.

I'm shocked the Record Web master hasn't deleted the anti-Arab sentiment.

There was a thread on this blog a while back about immigration and supposedly "racist" remarks were removed. Imagine if bloggers here were saying similar things about Mexicans as they are about Arabs, it would be deleted!

Why not here? Why not now? Why don't Arabs enjoy the same respect from a newspaper?

Seems like there is a double standard at the Record. Mmmmmm.

In any event, you still didn't answer the real question that I posed regarding Israel peacefully co-existing with its Arab neighbors.

Anonymous said...

Based on the above, it is difficult not to devolve into name calling regarding the questions posed. The following is my attempt.

Q: What is the United States' responsibility, if any, in trying to stop the fighting in Israel and Lebanon?
A: In my opinion:
1. The U.S. cannot be the world's policeman for any length of time without over extending itself (let alone addressing the question of, it is moral and legal that we do so). We have military personnel in something like 123 of the 192 countries of the world. I think it's safe to say with military expenditures (2004) of some $437 billion with an additional $160+ B per year for Iraq that we are now close to 6% of GDP (Vietnam at it's peak was 9.4% GDP) not to mention the thousands of troops we have in harms way and those that we have lost. Trying to police the world does not come w/o great cost...including political.
2. There will always be a war or conflagration somewhere in the world. Humans are like that.
With the above preamble, I believe short of cutting off military supplies to Israel or getting militarily involved ourselves, the best we can do is exert political pressure on both sides. Of course we have less pull on the Hezbollah side. It appears that both sides want the war to continue at least until one side is weakened sufficiently for it to sue for peace. We are dealing with centuries of hatred there. We won't be able to resolve that. I believe Hezbollah and their ilk are a menace to the U.S. and freedom thus I would not cut off arms sales to Israel (particularly since Iran, Syria, et. al. will not be cutting of aid to Hezbollah). Succinctly, the U.S. responsibility is to strive for piece in the are politically and strive to keep other countries (like Syria) from getting sucked into that morass.

Q: Do you think the fighting will spread to other countries in the region?
A. I think it easily could. Syria for various reasons is already making noise that it will do just that. Hopefully Assad has enough sense not to do so.

Q. What would you do if you were a world leader?
A. If I were a leader of the 'free' world faction I would: 1. gather about me as many experts and facts that I could and make decisions based on that brain trust and intel, 2. not being the world's policeman yet not waiting for issues to become WWIII, 3. create an organization of democratic countries for collaboration and minimize expenditures into the corrupt U.N., 4. keep America strong and vital by (among other things) decreasing government intervention into the lives of the citizens, 5. endeavor to dry up terrorist/despot funding and encourage the same of other countries, 6. encourage regions of the world to resolve their own problems.

If I were a leader of the 'controlled' world faction, I would: 1. use oil/energy money to expand my influence and power including acquisition of nuclear arms, 2. I would gather about me those I could trust and then keep them off balance with purges and use of force and bribes, 3. I would encourage the continued harassment of the 'free' world with regional violence, 4. I would take a world religion and modify it's teachings so that the populace would be happy to die (their reward is in the 'after life' not this one, thus it couldn't be verified). This would enable me to expand my power, control of the lives of others, and have an army of zealots, 5. I would partner with like minded despots until it was advantageous to depose them, 6. I would seek to weaken, if not annihilate, the 'free' world faction, directly and indirectly.

To answer the blog's basic question, I don't believe that the U.S. has a "responsibility" to end the fighting. The U.S. should do what it feels it needs to do to protect ITS interests in the region. Supporting Israel, the only stable, sane country in the region, does make some sense in that regard (at least in my opinion and many others).

I think the notion that the U.S. must intervene in every ethnic battle on the globe is ridiculous. Indeed, I would even say the U.S. didn't need to intervene in South Africa under Apartheid - its meddling without any real economic benefit to the U.S. South Africa for example like Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia) is now a de-stablized mess - no surprise. So, in sum, the U.S. has no required responsibility to end the fighting.

I enjoy stating the obvious, so here goes, "Arabs in general and Muslim fundamentalists in particular, hate anything they can't control...(women, Israel, the US, western freedoms, etcetera). So, they strive to either dominate or destroy what they cant control. When they fail, they become enraged at their own impotence. Then they start another cycle of plotting and scheming to prove themselves and purge the feelings of inferiority that they spawned themselves. (No, I am not a Psychologist, I just play one on the web.)

So, the freedoms espoused by the US, and propogated by American foreign policy, are clearly at odds with the Muslim theology of the Ummah, a world wide community living by Muslim rule. That is the goal of Muslim fundamentalists and they make no apologies for it.

The United States and Israel are therefor villified by Muslim leaders that otherwise would hold no power over their disaffected and potentially dangerous population.

Consider this, if the Arabs and Muslims weren't hating/attacking Israel and the US, they would be killing each other in horrific numbers. They would also most likely overthrow their own governments in the process. The Iran/Iaq War, the Lebanese civil war and the fractous nature of Arab politics provide great examples.

The Hizballah and the HAMAS attacked Israel and kidnapped the IDF soldiers because they were becoming irrelvant to their constituents. Their plan is working perfectly. Look at the support the Hizballah has garnered from the Lebanese people and the Muslim community. This sympathy translates directly into support for Iranian and Syrian intelligence officers operating inside Lebanon and to a leser degree Iraq. Make no mistake, they will win the war by intentionally provoking a battle they know they can't win. Lets just hope the Israelis make it as painful as possible for them in the process.

I have spent a lot of time in the Middle East and have daily dealings with Muslims here in the US. In short, I have found them to be a caustic people that are quick to anger, refuse to accept responsibility for their actions and look down on the rest of the world from the pedestal they believe the Qur'an provides them. Sad, but true.

So please, Emir Moustafa, return to your piece of the world and leave us alone. We dont need your algebra from the 7th century, your Persian rugs or your terrorist use of civilian targets to make a political point. I would rather that you just thank us for the freedoms we provide and go about your business.

Oh my gosh, thank you so much for your bold honesty and I truly mean it. I too know this to be true, but don't have the same currency or ability to say it because I am not Arab or Muslim. Good for you for being honest. You prove there are decent, rational thinking people of Arab and/or Muslim descent. You are a great contrast to the moron that has been polluting this blog from just about day one with his "canned", overused and abused salutations (i.e "Hamdallah", etc.)that pretty much embarass any decent person of Arab descent such as yourself.

So, check out the hateful comments from that hater Rabbi Aaronson from Park City's Temple Har Shalom on the cover of today's Park Record.

What a punk! I'd be more pissed off if it wasn't completely obvious that the rabbi is just using his paid pulpit to spew religious BS to further his own anti-Islam agenda. The opposite of anti-Semitic? Rabbi Aaronson, PC's poster boy for the hatred of Muslims.

Rabbi -- you ever hear of the FARC man? Wake the f@#$ up!

I'm sorry but this rabbi is way off base. This guy is a horrible example of the Jewish faith that I refuse to believe, as a whole, is as intolerant as Aaronson. To state that America's relationship with Israel is not a source of frustration for Muslims around the world is laughable. And to say it doesn't fuel divisiveness is just plain offensive and wrong.

Does this guy really think members of his congregation are that stupid to be swayed by his hateful rhetoric? And on holiest of days!

Shame on you Josh!

Does anybody really believe that Aaronson differentiates between what he terms 'radical Islam' and the rest of the Muslim world?

puhleeeeeeeeez!!!

Agreed. This rabbi is no mental giant and Jews in Park City will hopefully not lap up his hyperbole like kitties sucking from their mother's teet.

I read through Rabbi Aaronson's comments and found the majority of it to be, well, true. How else can you describe the Geo-political agenda of Radical Islam? If you disagree with the Rabbi, contact him and have a discussion face to face. I think he would be more than able to defend his position on nearly all the issues. I do however, disagree with him on one point. I think we should have 18-24 months of mandatory Federal Service for all citizens (military, Border Protection or some other service). Not because it would affect how we wage war. But because it would provide a common basis for us, as Americans, to engage in the complex task of living our democratic ideals.

One more point while I am on my soap box. Radical Islamists will never stop attacking us...even if we give in to all their demands. If you dont beleive it, watch a few be-heading videos and listen to their comments. They have all the ideological ammunition they need to perform horrendous acts of cruelty from now until they are called home. Nothing we do or say will satiate their hatred. See ya in the sand.

Thanks for your useless perspectives. As to a face to face with Aaronson, puhleeze, it ain't worth my time!

Get CNN Josh. First the pope and now this stupid rabbi.

Aaronson's comments have exposed Temple Har Shalom as a bastian of hate. The congregation has become a laughingstock because of our rabbi's bizarre remarks on Yom Kippur and the reputation of the Temple can only be saved if this rabbi resigns.

The good rabbi speaks the truth. That is why so many libs on this blog and future letters to the editor in that liberal rag the Park Record, will condemn his comments. Liberals don't mind lies. It is the truth that they hate and the rabbi has showed courage by calling a spade a spade.
As I have said before we are surrounded by idiots here in Park City and liberalism is a mental disease that runs rampant here.

Man, your clueless. The rabbi's freakshow has nothing to do with party politics.

Perhaps the one telling lies is the man in the mirror?
