There oughta be a law...

When it comes to flag burning, wearing bike/motorcycle helmets or gay marriage, citizens are often sharply divided on where civil rights and government regulation begin and end. Should flag burning be banned? Is it up to the cops to make sure everyone is buckled up or wearing a helmet, and what about gay marriage. Let us know where you stand by posting your comments here.

Patriotism to some is a religion. Much in the same way the previuos blogger said no to gay marriage, probably based on religious belief. Religion should stay out of goverment, remember why this country was founded?

Senator Hatch occupies one of Utah's two senate seats, but does not really represent us in Washington. He moved here from Pittsburgh only about 5 years before beating Frank Moss in the 1976 senatorial election and heading back East to Washington. If he leaves the Senate alive, I'm sure he'll stay back there to be a lobbyist or song writer or whatever.

He keeps proposing and supporting these goofy constitutional amendments (not just flag burning and gay marriage, but also allowing immigrants to become President) because he is desperate to leave behind a legacy that includes altering our nation's most solemn document -- if only in the most trivial possible way. This is rooted in his own deep feelings of personal inadequacy as well as in a twisted interpretation of the LDS belief that the constitution was divinely inspired.

If Hatch wants to keep playing with these issues he should go home to Pennsylvania and get them to re-enact a motorcycle helmet law.

Huh? They should make it a law that you should have to pass an IQ/common sense test before you are allowed to breed, that should blanket most future issues.

I feel that they can pass a law allowing burning of the flag only if they attach another bill that prohibits prosicution of veterans who kick there ass's

Question is how much of a police state (or stated more benignly, nanny state) do you want? How much of your freedoms and money (it all costs money to keep you safe from yourself) are you willing to give up? How sure are you that government is right AND actually looking out for your best interests, not to mention their also looking out for your neighbor's (and everyone's) best interests.
I suggest that you are in a much better position to know what's best for you and same with your neighbor. I suggest a limited government governs best.
To that end:
Should flag burning be banned? No
Should cops enforce seat belt wearing? No (just make sure you have good medical insurance if you don't)
Should cops force you to wear a helmet (on a bicycle I assume)? No (but it would be wise to protect that noggin but it’s your choice)
Gay marriage is, IMHO, an oxymoron and where I part ways with a number of other Libertarians. Call it something else and you have my vote.
Speaking of vote, consider voting Shumway for your State Rep.

Despite having several very-dear friends who are gay, I must concede that gay marriage takes away the sanctity of the marriage between a man and a woman - as put forth in the Bible and other religious revelatory books and religions. Children who are unable to have the blessing of a mother and a father, spelled-out a female and a male parent, are at some disadvantage in life. I don't chastise people who are gay, nor do I look down on any single parent; rather I respect all people in whatever their choices are, or their lives are like - for whatever reason. I'm not trying to sound self-righteous; I'm honest. But given a choice of either/or, children deserve a traditional family, with a built-in role model in each parent, and the benefit of Mars and Venus and the God-given security and sanctity of family and home. Please contradict me; I'm sure it's the popular thing to do. A traditional marriage is not on the way out, however unpopular the minority tries to make it.

Your rights end where anothers rights begin and I have the right not to pay for your catostrophic medical bills. What fun it must be to have the wind in your hair right before you get run over by a distracted driver...COOL!

I ride and always wear a helmet. Maybe I dont look like a Hells Angel or some Hollywood poster boy. I do however have some semblance of protection for a slow speed crash. It also forces me to think about my own safety instead of how awesome I look for all the teenage girls. Ditto for seatbelts...please grow up and grow old with the rest of us.

I love when pwople quote the Bible or other major religious sources as their objection to Gay marriage. What a joke. How can you single out one passage form the Bible and live your life in complete ignorance of everything else written? Here is a simple one, Islam and Christianity both say that you shall not have any graven image of anything in the heavens, above the land and below the sea. In other words no photos, drawings, paintings, etc of anything livinig. Do you have any of these? As you know, religious folk, no one sin is any greater than any other sin......

Graven Images as compared to homosexual behavior? Now thats a pretty huge leap. Please learn a little bit about the Bible before you judge someone else's interpretation.

I also find it interesting that people dont want laws to protect the very symbol of our free society or to protect their fellow citizens from harm, yet they want the passage of laws to protect gay marriage.

So how about this.

You can burn the flag if you are willing to face someone who lost friends or family protecting what it symbolizes.

You can skip the helmet and seatbelt if you have several million dollars in health insurance to pay for your own medical bills.

You can "Marry" anyone you want in whatever ceremenoy you choose. Nobody is gonna stop you. If you choose to marry someone other than what state law or your church doctrine allows, then get a civil contract that outlines each parties rights and responsibilities. It's not that difficult. It just forces the individuals to take some responsible action in private as opposed to making a public statement for the media.

How are they different? You choose to make one more inportant than the other. Why is Homosexuality not one of the 10 commandments if it is such a big deal. Also, it is my religion, you go learn about it....

I have to laugh at all the time wasted on controversies like gay marriage. I have known many gay couples in my time (and i will guarantee that YOU have too - you just didn't realize it!) and have to say that those who choose to adopt and/or have children are far more commited to their course of action then most heterosexual couples.
I also have a problem that a couple can live together for 30 years yet have no say in their partner's illness, property, assets, and dying.
Bottom line, how does allowing gay marriage affect the sanctity (sp?) of a heterosexual union?!! They're not coming into YOUR bed!
Also, on another note, years ago i worked in the restaurant business with a young gay man who said to me "those married Mormon men are the BEST!"...

Gay marriage should be allowed. Homosexuals should be allowed to be as miserable as the rest of us!
